The New York State Public Service Commission has licensed a lot of upstate transmission system upgrades which might be designed to alleviate bottlenecks within the grid and permit the next penetration of renewable energy.
In its resolution, the fee permitted requests from Central Hudson Gas & Electric, New York State Electric & Gas, National Grid and Rochester Gas and Electric to develop a complete of 62 native transmission upgrades that can cut back congestion within the Capital Region, the southwest and northern area of the state.
“New York is making significant upgrades and additions to the state’s existing transmission and distribution systems to integrate new large-scale renewable energy projects into the state’s energy supply, and we must ensure that these investments are smart and cost-effective,” says fee Chair Rory M. Christian. “The commission recognizes the need to address congestion in certain parts of the state where renewable energy is already bottled and where additional generation projects are in development or likely to be developed in the future.”
In complete, the initiatives will clear the best way for 3.5 GW of capability for clear energy – sufficient for greater than 2.8 million average-sized houses.
“In order to keep moving towards our clean energy goals, New York needed grid investments in these three locations,” feedback Anne Reynolds, government director of the Alliance for Clean Energy New York. “This will allow electricity generating projects to deliver the clean power they make and will facilitate additional renewable energy projects coming online.”
The initiatives, which can value an estimated $4.4 billion, embrace upgrades to present transmission traces, upgrades to present substations and the development of three new substations. The utilities plan to finish the initiatives between 2024 and 2030.
